Orawskie Podzamcze - an extraordinary town
Its greatest treasure is the Orava Castle, rising 112 meters above the Orava River. It is estimated that this building was constructed in the 13th century, after the Tatar invasion, and was meant to secure the eastern border of the country and the trade route leading to Poland. Due to multiple expansions, the structure combines features of many different styles – Gothic, Romanesque, as well as Renaissance, modern, and Baroque.
A castle consisting of three parts
Due to the aforementioned expansions and renovations that were carried out and interrupted due to wars, it is said that the building consists of three medieval-Renaissance complexes. We distinguish the upper castle – the oldest part, the middle one – with a quadrangular tower, and the lower one with a church, a tower, and the Thurzo Palace. All of them are characterized by extraordinary architecture, which makes the building truly unique.
